UK pledges 20 million pounds to annual Palestinian budget

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- The British government has agreed to pay its annual contribution of 20 million pounds ($26,671,000) to support the Palestinian national budget, a large part of which will go to the education sector, according to official Palestinain Authority (PA)-owned Wafa news.

Wafa reported that the Palestinian Minister of Education Sabri Saydam spoke on the phone on Saturday with the British Minister of State for International Development and Minister of State for the Middle East at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office Alistair Burt.

“Saydam said that the continued support of education by donor countries demonstrates the high level and confidence in the Palestinian educational system and its ability to achieve qualitative results,” Wafa said.

He reportedly “stressed the importance of continuing this kind of support for education, particularly in the areas that contribute to strengthening the educational system.”
