BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The Royal Charity Organization of Bahrain has pledged $5.5 million to the UN's Palestine refugee agency UNRWA for reconstruction efforts in the heavily damaged Gaza Strip, according to a statement.
$200,000 worth of essential supplies will also be provided by RCO, in a separate agreement, for Palestinians affected by the Israeli offensive on Gaza.
"With this generous donation to UNRWA's Flash Appeal, Bahrain once again stands at the forefront of support to Gaza," UNRWA commissioner-general Pierre Krähenbühl said in the statement from UNRWA.
Krähenbühl added that the funds will support a "longer-term reconstruction program" in addition to providing "urgently needed relief" to Gazans.
Krähenbühl said the "scale of destruction of civilian infrastructure is extensive," especially since tens of thousands of people no longer have homes to return to.
Bahrain previously provided some $5 million for the construction of a new school, health center, and a library following the 2008-2009 Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip.
"Specific projects which will be funded by the RCO donation will be confirmed as soon as more detailed needs assessments in Gaza are possible," the statement added.
