BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- An Israeli military spokeswoman told Ma'an that 13 soldiers have been killed in intense fighting in the Gaza Strip on Sunday alone, bringing the total to at least 18 since the beginning of a ground invasion late Thursday.

The Israeli military spokeswoman said that all of the soldiers killed were from the elite Golani Brigades.

The military said in a statement released around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday that it was still "completing the identification process" and that the names would be made public following checks with the families.

The military also said that 53 soldiers had been wounded on fighting on Sunday, on top of the 60 soldiers it previously said were wounded the day before.

The wounded include a commander in the Golani Brigade.

Palestinian militants have engaged the Israeli military in fierce fighting across the Gaza Strip since they launched a ground invasion on Thursday.

Since the fighting began, hamas has released numerous videos and images which purport to show captured Israeli weapons.

The Israeli deaths include a Hamas cross-border raid into Israel on Saturday that killed two Israeli soldiers as they were patrolling in the southern region of Eshkol.

In Friday, meanwhile, eyewitnesses said that Israeli forces had been forced to retreat from Beit Lahiya, even while Israeli forces made progress in their invasion across swathes of northern and southern Gaza.

Israel launched its assault on the Gaza Strip 13 days ago, with near continuous air strikes and shelling from land and sea on the besieged coastal enclave of 1.7 million people.

Israeli forces launched a ground invasion on late Thursday which has so far killed more than 200 Palestinians, the vast majority of whom are civilians, including 66 in one neighborhood of Gaza City alone on Sunday.

Israel said that the operation -- which it called "Protective Edge" -- was meant to reduce rocket fire from the region into Israel, which ahd increased in June and early July after Israel launched a massive assault against Hamas in the West Bank that left 10 Palestinians dead, 130 injured, and more than 600 Hamas-affiliated individuals in prison.

That operation was launched in response to the disappearance of three Israeli teenagers from a Jewish settlement in the West Bank in June, which Israel accused Hamas of involvement in but which Hamas denied.

Young, naive,Israeli soldiers are VERY nervous &trigger-happy too.So how many of those killed were by FRIENDLY-FIRE(Fratricide)?
There're MORE Israeli troops-year-round-who commit SUICIDE,than die on the occupation/assault battle-field! That's Ziocide! Golani Brigade is overrun by RAVSHATZ Commanders their rabid political rabbi's & outpost racist thugs. And the term "Elite"is questionable/relative considering Israel's NOT SO"pure"&"humane"resume.Even Nazi's thought they were 'elite'!

Now Netanyahu has not only the blood of Gazans but of Israeli soldiers on his hands. As the Israeli military body count rises, so shall the opposition by the Isreali public. There can never be a military solution.

Hamas kills Israeli soldiers, Israel kills Palestinian civilians. Hamas has proved that they have the moral high ground in this war.

The media also emphasizes the fact that only twenty one Israelis have been killed by Hamas rocket fire. Indeed some media and international organizations seem implicitly to be condemning Israel for protecting the lives of its own citizens, by repeatedly pointing out there has been only one fatality, while Palestinian deaths have reached over 260. The reason there has been only one Israeli death so far is because Israel spends hundreds of millions of dollars trying to protect its civilians.

Free Gaza from the savagery of being forced by said elected officials to live under deplorable conditions due to their elected leaders being too busy building bombs, their terrorist infrastructure and engaging in a relentless campaign of hate against Israel. Shouldn't they have been concentrating their efforts on building a society with a progressive economy, quality medical facilities an uncorrupt, honest and dependable police force, emergency medical services and functional fire departments?

Get it through your thick heads, Palestine-lovers, that this is not a setback for Israel. It is painful, but Hamas has pissed us off to the point where we're very sorry, but we're going to hit Hamas no matter how many women and children they hide behind. The facts speak for themselves: Hamas' government ministry ordered Gazans to ignore IDF warnings tellng it's better they die; UNRWA admitted Hamas stores missiles in its schools; foreign journalists documented Hamas operating in civilian areas.

From the top is very easy, you bombarded them and call it a day…i love when the fight goes to the ground, there is good feeling to see that the aggressors can drop like flies, just like in Lebanon, start dropping and them run back to your mothers and American jews who adore to support you but never fight, nor to America nor to Israel!

It may already be too late at this stage, but unless Hamas asks for a truce now, this war will become like Syria's War - A Fight To The Death, with - 100,000 will be killed in Gaza (just like Syria), and - 1,000,000 will become refugees from Gaza (just like Syria) !!
