TULKAREM (Ma’an) -- Two Palestinian teenagers committed suicide on Thursday after failing their high school exams.

The Ministry of Education published the results of the final high school exams, known as Tawjihi, on Thursday. The high school qualification is required for admission to universities.

In Tulkarem in the northern West Bank, 18-year-old Nisrin Jumaa hanged herself in her family home after learning that she had failed the Tawjihi, locals told Ma'an.

Police confirmed that the teenager was pronounced dead at the Thabit Thabit Hospital.

In Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza, Muhammad Zaqut committed suicide by shooting himself after learning that he had failed the exams, police spokesman Ayyub Abu Shaar told Ma'an.

Earlier Thursday, a teenage girl threw herself from the second floor of a building in Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza after learning she had failed the Tawjihi.

She suffered pelvic and foot fractures and was transferred to the Kamal Odwan hospital, health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qidra said.

This is heartbreaking news. Teenagers and children all around feel a lot of pressure these days because from a young age the sense to be the best and live up to expectation is so prevalent. What children and young adults need to be told is that if they don't succeed the first time there are other options to try again.

Passing exams in Palestine is more of a path to freedom from Israeli collective punishment(economic attrition)as well as self-improvement/honor. These students/families are under so much pressure(econo-familial-political) to maximise routes to freedom &quality of life. But to take their lives? No,that shame/guilt is un-necessary.In comfort zones it's just an exam.In Gaza,it's a key to freedom &choice.Especially for women.RIP!

I've been on holidays here for the period that these kids have been studying for their finals. The amount of pressure put on these kids is way too extreme. The exams are super hard, which is why only a hand full pass. Not passing pretty much means that one has put their family to shame and they will live in economic ruin for the res of their life. In AUSTralia, even if you don't pass there are so many pathways to get to uni, unfortunately here it's not like that. Not that suicide is the solution

# 4, you are correct. This pre-historic evaluation system of someone’s academic standings, which is based on total memorization, needs to be addressed and changes should be implemented to move the evaluation system forward to meet the 21 century education expectations which are based on comprehension and critical thinking.

#4:Bravo.Palestinian students come from a long history of high literacy, academia, media & must remember that even in failing(1st time)they're FAR MORE intelligent, stoic, wise &world savvy than many students here in the USA where education levels across the board are a shameful disgrace, coz our TAXES are laundered into u8nsustainable US MILITARISM globally, instead of US educ/health. FEEL NO SHAME Palestine.Be absolutely proud, all things considered!Never give up.You will achieve!

p.s. #5:MIM:Oh my Lord! 21C. education"expectations"stop with those who write the curriculum(often ideological revisionists/censor-maniacs themselves). On the shop-floor level of US classrooms,21st century"academic standings"are mid level(thro' in the military)GEC majority,or high academic(with lifetime YOKE of economic debt/stress )& no jobs available in the 'pool'.The rest are either pillaging Royalists yearning for the 17th C,or those abandoned by D.C.after fighting for 21stC."democracy".

There is a certain irony here. In forcing Palestinians into a walled ghetto culture of deprivation in which academic achievement becomes one of the few ways out, the Jews may be making the Palestinians what they once were.

Many cultures who demand too much and value education have similar issues. Japan and Korea come to mind. It is OK to have high expectations and raise the education bar high , better than having high self esteem based not on achievement but on one's self image. Parents must recognize the academic ability of their child and not to expect miracles ....Teachers and parents must agree on what is a reasonable expectation for that child.

As Zigmund Freud once said "Somtimes a cigar is just a cigar" Piling all the Palestinian's short comings on Israel, provide a way out of dealing with the communal social/cultural problems. The national drive to succeed at all price for the sake of Palestine, pervert the development of mentally healthy young generation of teenagers. What a price to pay...

I thought I'll pass on this one but jerks like mel et colin conveinced me otherwise. So here is what I have to say. Arab world should lower expectations and stress off kids and tell them that in all probabilities their chances to see any real fruit of their learning. backwardation is celebrating in the arab world. look at syria, lebanon, egypt, iraq....not much better with palestinians fighting one another and their brothers like syria, kuwait

All of you commentators from America, Canada, Australia, US...have no idea what you're talking about. It has nothing to do with politics whatsoever. There is something fundamentally flawed in our culture surrounding this issue and its far worse than this fucking occupation.

It's absolutely sickening to hear about these suicides and attempted suicide(s) ... now, in the past or future (and hopefully something will be done so they WON'T). At any rate, to everyone OUTSIDE Israel, the State of Palestine and Gaza ... RE-READ (and this pertains esp. to @ 8) who believes our own centuries-long European ghettoization was a major cause in driving us to acquire more education--which it was but that's beside the point if applying that to the Palestinians' current (cont.)

situation between them and us for THEIR education) ... again ... RE-READ what Rami/Palestine SAYS IN @ 12) ... because HE'S TOTALLY and 100% DAMN RIGHT. Separately ... Since he's completely right, the only way in the short-term to stop these horrific student suicides is for the PA and Hamas to implement imperative school-wide and SOCIAL campaigns of direct education and active monitoring and reporting of students' attitudes on a repetitive basis throughout the year, together with (cont.)

mandatory, personal (one-on-one ONLY) student counseling sessions with those students (privately) identified as being "at risk" of suffering emotional overload of hopelessness and despair if academically disappointed. There is no magical measuring device to detect psychological trauma. May there never be any more such suicides, actual or attempted, now or ever ... Insha'Allah.
