JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- Israel's mayor of Jerusalem said Tuesday that Palestinians will never have sovereignty in the Holy City, suggesting that they rename Ramallah as "northern Jerusalem" instead.

Speaking to The Times of Israel news site, Nir Barkat said it was in Jerusalem's DNA to be under "sole Jewish rule" and pressure from the international community to stop building on occupied territory was "illegal."

"The answer is no separation of the city … If the world pushes us there, it’s just a matter of time before things will fall apart," Barkat told the Times on the eve of Jerusalem Day, a controversial national holiday celebrating what Israelis call the "reunification" of the city.

The international community views Palestinian East Jerusalem to be under occupation.

Barkat said it was "ridiculous" that Jews were not allowed to pray in the highly sensitive Al-Aqsa compound and added that he was uncomfortable with the status quo on the issue.

There are around 360,882 Palestinians in Jerusalem, or 38 percent of the city's population, and East Jerusalem is widely viewed as the future capital of a Palestinian state.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem in 1967 and formally annexed the area in 1980 after passing the 'Jerusalem Law' in a move never recognized by the international community.

Finding themselves involuntarily under Israeli control, Israeli rights group ACRI says Palestinians in Jerusalem do not play any part in policy-making in the city, even though Israeli authorities have an obligation to uphold their rights.

Once a center for Palestinian political, economic, religious and cultural life, the "effects of annexation, neglect, rights violations, and the completion of the Separation Barrier have led to an unprecedented deterioration in the conditions" of East Jerusalem, ACRI says.

It's a good thing when these swine start revealing their true colors. They should be encouraged to do so, and their pronouncements publicized as widely as possible.

Here we go again, more and more control for the Israeli's and none for Palestinians in East Jerusalem. And Jerusalem it is not in their Jewish DNA, that is all propaganda. It is another excuse for ethnic cleansing of East Jerusalem.

"The international community views Palestinian East Jerusalem to be under occupation." IT'S INTERNATIONAL LAW! So they don't view it as.

5 ) Historical Viewpoint / Reality

Regardless of differing international viewpoints, in Reality: - Palestine was once a province of the Turkish/Ottoman Empire. And, - Palestine was a British Mandate after WW2. And, - Parts of Palestine were under Egyptian (Gaza), Jordanian (West Bank), and Syrian (Golan) sovereignties, between 1948 and 1967, But - NEVER has there existed a "Palestinian East Jerusalem", so it can not "be under occupation", regardless of how some international community members may view the situation !!!!

Number 2, wake up and smell the coffee, and get used to the single sole Jewish State of Israel.

"Nir Barkat said it was in Jerusalem's DNA to be under "sole Jewish rule" and pressure from the international community to stop building on occupied territory was "illegal." This guy is insane. First of all, Judaism is not the sole monotheistic religion on this planet. There are already millions of people out there whom are uncomfortable with the fact that Jews are in control of Christian and Muslim holy sites. Go ahead, piss them off. No one recognizes Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem.

Palestinian leaders are on the record: -the want a single Islamic Palestinian state with no Israel -they will either deport or kill all the Jews born after 1921 -they will send "back to Europe and Russia" 3 million Jews who were refugees from Arab countries, Africa and Iran. -they will destroy all Jewish religious sites in Jerusalem and Hebron - they openly declare that there are none. -they maintain the death sentence for anybody selling a building to a Jew Palestine=apartheid. It's a fact.

#8.....says the guy stepping on the throats of unarmed Palestinians while wearing an "Uzi does it T-shirt" and pointing an Israeli-made Galil assault rifle at their heads while shouting some ideological nonsense about "eretz" Israel being a gift to the so-called "chosen" people. Riiiight....Palestine is an apartheid, not Israel....we surely believe you....

Who speaks in 19th c language, "sole Jewish rule," in the 21st century? Weird.

#9) You are confusing us all Rami. You can't accuse Israel of an apartheid system within it's own borders because unlike your fantasyland, Israel is a democracy! When were your last elections? When is the next? Israel's government was chosen by a majority vote that including Israeli Arabs. If you suffer under apartheid it must come from the PA. So where the hell is this apartheid you want us to be against. That shit only works if you are one of the "river to the sea" bozos.

# 11 - "Israel is a democracy"? When did the Palestinians in the occupied territories under Israeli control get the vote? And the "river to the sea" was the aim of, firstly, that bozo David Ben Gurion, latterly the Likud charter. Read it. And read Ben Gurion's promise to the Jews in 1946 ff. Then you can, perhaps, make some educated comment without being "confused".

#11 You're an idiot. Keep telling yourself that Israel is a "democracy", maybe one day you'll really believe it. If Jerusalem is part of Israel than Palestinians in Jerusalem are Israeli citizens so treat them like all the other Jewish Israeli citizens. Jerusalem Municipality collects taxes for public services but doesn't provide public services to Arabs in EJ. 99.9% of building permits are denied to Arabs, 99.9% of building permits for Jews are approved. When was the last Jewish home bulldozed.

Mayer Barkat is obviously talking tough for Jerusalem Day but what he's saying doesn't make sense. How is it "in Jerusalem's DNA" for Jews to rule Arab neighbourhoods? Like Silwan. Poverty stricken, violent, scary Arab Silwan? And why does Israel even WANT to? What sense does "sole Jewish rule" make when Israel has NO credible claim to ANY Arab neighbourhood that isn't greed dressed up as something fancy like "destiny" or "divine will"? BUT what DOES make sense is to DIVIDE the city

15 ) ian / australia
09/05/2013 23:49
(contd.) with parts that are obviously Jewish going to Israel and parts obviously Islamic or Palestinian, to Palestine. In this way, Israel would LEGALLY take over the Jewish Quarter, Western Wall, Kotel plaza, Dung Gate, Jaffa Gate etc. and Palestine would assume sovereignty over the Muslim Quarter (inc. the Haram) and Arab neighbourhoods like Sheikh Jarrah, A-Tur, Silwan. What ELSE, in Yahweh's name, makes any sense? And what OTHER solution can possibly resolve the conflict fairly?

#8 "Palestine=apartheid. It's a fact." Hysterical rubbish mostly Brian. Your rundown of what "Palestinian leaders", "on the record", "want" is in fact what a few marginal extremist nuts "want". It's like saying "American leaders" want to publicly burn the Koran because one moron in Florida threatened to. But you do get one thing right. "Palestine=apartheid". Not that Palestine IS an "apartheid state", which is more hyperbole (though based on a grain of truth) but that "Palestine" is a PLACE,

17 ) ian / australia
10/05/2013 04:25
(contd.) a concrete entity, as you say, a "FACT".

To ian #15 'And what OTHER solution can possibly resolve the conflict fairly?' Since Zionism is a lie and an injustice from start to finish, the 'other solution' would be to undo Zionism entirely. And happily (with Israel's continuing help) this is a perfectly feasible undertaking. Just let them dig their own grave and then pull the plug.

Just give the al aqsa mosque , gaza, and West Bank to people of Arab.. Is that so difficult ...? The Jewish people are stubborn .. They don't want peace is it? If they give sovereign state to PLO ..surely no problem at all....to the world and other country.. We Muslim can live with jew as long they don't start a conflict .. Learn from the past... Peace.. #20, 700,000 palestinians left israel, 650,000 jews left arab states at the same time or shortly after because of prosecution. what is your suggestion for the 650,000? obviously there will be no solution if one 1 side feels victimized. My mom was 4 years old when escapted yemen after her father died. a house and shop was left as is.

@20 ''We Muslim can live with jew as long they don't start a conflict .. Learn from the past... Peace.. Malaysia'' What rubbish. Your Christian population live in fear, and a good number of Jews who used to live openly in the state of Penang until towards the end of the 1970s, when many had to emigrate due to growing state-sanctioned antisemitism.
