BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli security forces and settlers clashed on Friday during the attempted evacuation of an illegal settlement outpost north of Ramallah, Israeli media reported.

Israeli security forces, including the army, police and border police, took part in the evacuation of Oz Zion outpost in an area near the illegal settlement of Bet El, north of al-Bireh.

Some 150 settlers confronted the security forces and threw stones at them, injuring five Israeli border police, Ynet news-site reported.

Settlers also punctured the tires of two border police vehicles. Two settlers were arrested during the clashes, Ynet said.

An Israeli army spokeswoman told Ma'an that "Israeli police and border police evacuated Israeli civilians that had attempted to reach a closed military zone. The civilians hurled rocks at security forces who responded with riot dispersal means."

Israeli security forces are expected to remain in the area over the weekend, Ynet added. The Oz Zion outpost has been evacuated several times in the past but settlers have returned to the area.

In September, 50 settler families were evicted from Migron outpost in the occupied West Bank after a court ruled that it had been built illegally on Palestinian land.

The United Nations deems all Israeli settlements in the West Bank to be illegal. Israel disputes this and distinguishes between about 120 settlements it has sanctioned and about 100 outposts erected by settlers without authorization.

About 500,000 Israeli settlers live on occupied Palestinian land.

In America, home invaders will likely meet the muzzle of a gun. Why should Palestinians face a violent invading force with less defence than the average American?

All Israeli settlements in Occpied Palestine (e.g. West Bank) are illegal, conform the UN resolutions and international LAW. So not only these outposts must be evacuated and dismantled but ALL settlements. This is just window dressing and only for Israeli Public Relation purposes.

'Some 150 settlers confronted the security forces and threw stones at them' Nu? So why don't the soldiers seize a few, lead them out of sight, murder them, and say they themselves were assaulted? I thought that's how they did things in Israel.

I am sure the Palestinians pine for the good old days of 1948 when they had their state and should have accepted it. But it was not to be because their idiot relatives in the other arab backwater states promised to drive the Israelis out. But the tables got turned against the Palestinians and since then the relatives are only willing to offer lip service.

1 law to everyone. palestinians or settlers illegal building should be evacuated. The democratic state of israel treats it's citizen like it treats it's palestinian enemies. kudos

I'm with Amin - ALL settlements in the West Bank are illegal according to international law - but wait there, does Israel recognise international law? Only when it suits their purposes, and that's not the case with the settlements. It's part of the Likud charter, after all, to build more and more settlements in the West Bank until they extend to the Jordan river. Then Israel will stop. (Perhaps.) And Colin - that is how they do things in Israel - except for those of the chosen ones.

Maybe its time they use tear gas & rubber bullets like they do on Peaceful Protestors against an Apartheid,Illegal Occupation. Just a thought

A strange dance. Settlers "clash" with the state that recruited them, set them up in outposts, basically supports them, commends their fighting spirit and religious zeal and does nothing when they return. For the kids on the roof who will be neither hurt nor prosecuted it's really all a big game. But they are a problem for Israel because while they're NECESSARY, to encroach further into Palestinian territory, (a dirty job most find unpalatable requiring a special kind of nut on the fronline)

10 ) ian / australia
29/12/2012 11:33
(contd.) they're also an embarrassment. Israel's Frankenstein's monster, Israel's Golem, created, Manchurian Candidate-style, for a dirty job, that has rebelled and run amok. And they're also a window on the SOUL of Israel, and the moral rot at its core. Lots of places have histories of dark deeds committed on the frontier...long atoned for and ammends made. But Israel alone, with its thuggish, out-of-control foot-soldiers on the ZIONIST frontier (deep in the West Bank) can't drag itself

#5 You're missing a step southparkbear, before everyone can be treated equally under "1 law" in the "democratic state of Israel": define the borders so you know WHERE your jurisdiction applies. Oz Zion, north of Ramallah, is way outside sovereign Israel in occupied Palestine which means the laws of military occupation (GCIV) apply...which means there shouldn't be any settlers there in the first place.

(contd.) "...israel treats it's citizen like it treats it's palestinian enemies." Really? It's "Palestinian enemies" Israel tends to assassinate from helicoptors, poison, incinerate in their homes from the air or evict to let nutters from Brooklyn move in. Is that the kind of Jewish utopia you had in mind?

#5 "The democratic state of israel treats it's citizen like it treats it's palestinian enemies. kudos" If that garbled sentence means anything I assume you're saying democratic Israel treats everyone equally under the law. Maybe it does but I'd point out that Israeli law stops at the Green Line (where laws of occupation take over) and as one in five Israelis are Palestinian that makes them "citizens" not "palestinian enemies"...despite what many Jewish Israelis might think in private

Most of the Israeli Army hate the"settlers" MORE than native Palestinians ,who give them LESS hassle,& are less of a threat(in actuality)than these rabid Jewish-only colonists.ALL Jewish-only colonies are ILLEGAL!The Border Police(especially Russian ones)are usually TORTUROUS BRUTES to Palestinian civilians who just try to keep a "fabric"of DIGNITY in their "life"under Occupation! Look at yourself in the mirror ISRAEL! NO PURITY there!Just violent, lonely, suicidal HYPOCRISY!

#18 You're right Reader. Israel doesn't really have its own money, just its 3 billion dollar "allowance" so it's the US that pays and is ultimately responsible for everything: wall, weapons, settlements, occupation. Israel's support for the outpost settlers is ideological. While they occasionally dismantle them in gaudy rituals, the deeper message, conveyed by every stirring national myth, every uplifting image, every mention of Judea and Samaria is that they are the very soul of Israel,
