TEL AVIV, Israel (Ma'an) -- Quartet envoys asked the Israeli Prime Minister to provide "confidence-building measures" to keep Palestinian officials in talks after the end of the month, Israeli media reported on Tuesday.

PLO official Saeb Erekat met Israeli envoy Yitzhak Molcho in Amman on Monday, in the second round of unofficial, closed-door talks hosted by Jordan.

Hoping to extend the meetings beyond the Jan. 26 deadline it had set in October, the Quartet and Jordan have called on Benjamin Netanyahu to consider freeing Palestinian prisoners and expanding the Palestinian Authority's control, among other measures, the Israeli daily Haaretz reported.

Palestinian officials insist they cannot enter full talks with Israel until it freezes settlement building on occupied Palestinian land, saying this threatens the viability of the Palestinian state they would be negotiating for. There was no indication after Monday's meeting that a settlement freeze was being considered by Israel.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said the PLO gave Israel a proposal on borders and security issues at the first summit last Tuesday, and Israeli representatives promised to respond to the proposals in future meetings.

One more meeting is scheduled before the end of January.

Wow - I never imagined the tired old concept of "Trust-Building-Measures" could be recycled so many times. Will the visionless, spineless PA go along this time? Rest assured - YES. That is why, WE DEMAND THE DISSOLUTION OF THE PA in 2012.

What's the use of releasing prisioners on one hand and then recapturing others the next day. These confidence building gestures by Israel are useless and just a ploy to delay peace. Palestinians should count the number of prisioners captured since the last prisoner swap with Gaza which will then confirm whether such gestures are worth it.

How come its only Israel that is ever required to give, give, give? How about Pals making some confidence building gestures for a change? Like actually deleting the "death to Israel" part of their constitution and stop teaching their kids to hate Jews. All promised back in '93 but never implemented!

There is NO reason for Israel to "go along this time" either, since
even if Israel provides "incentives by freeing prisoners and expanding
the Palestinian Authority's control", NOTHING WILL CHANGE, because:
- "Palestinian insist they cannot enter full talks with Israel until it freezes settlement building", and
- Israel can NOT freeze settlement building, after the last 10 month freeze where Palestinian made NO gestures in return !!!!!

@ Tobias: Israel has NEVER frozen settlement building in Palestine. Israel slowed down the settlement activities for some months, but never stopped. There were numerous examptions. The israeli organization B?Tselem counted 2.500 "examptions": http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/israel-and-palestine/100721/israeli-settlement-freeze. The so-called "settlement freeze" was nothing else than pure propaganda.

You can dissolve the PA & the "Quotet".They were both spawned by Israeli/US/UK Zionists anyway,as distractions away from Palestinian national unity! Delay/freeze Palestine unto all stolen Arab land is covered with apartheid Jewish(white)-only colonies.Deter Arab rights, until Israeli terror has destroyed Palestine,& dominates all Arab neighbors,i.e. oppression through colonial military-terror,again. & find another,greedy,power-hungry Arab faction 2 replace Israeli-proxy PA? DIVIDE &RULE...AGAIN!!

5) The partial slowdown in settlement construction was very much a case of "too little, too late". Of more interest is the broader picture: now that Palestine is in effect attempting yet another round of negotiations, what's the obstacle to recognition at the UN?

#Tobias no need to freeze the settlements since we both know they will not stop eating away at Palestinian private agricultural lands. We both know the 2-state charade has long been dead so the question now is when and how we can come to implement a solution that is fair to everyone, including equality, right to vote, to move around, and above all, to return !!

I second the Bravo for Nour.
Civil rights for Pals!
Jewish Israelis need to quit spitting on Christians or Muslims in Jerusalem.
Israelis should be really embarassed at the spitting by thier Jewish bretheren.
I believe the Nazis did the same to Jews in Poland and Germany.

The Quartet probably realizes that a peace deal is very unlikely EVER,
since Israel already gave incentives to Palestinians (a 10 month freeze),
and remember that Palestinians gave nothing to Israel in return !!!

And, if the Quartet is going to mediate, it should NOT be BIASED, so:
- if they ask for incentives, from Israel to Palestinians, then
- they should also ask for incentives, from Palestinians to Israel !!!

Israel should not and will not agree for any one-sided "confidence-building measures" unless palestinians are asked to take take similar measures. No more one-sided measures. 8 - you have been outside for too long and may be do not know that US promised to veto any palestinian move for statehood in the UN Security Council. So, unless palestinians start compromising and negotiating they do not have any hope for statehood and will settle for membership in UNESCO. They can have state in Gaza...

10 Carlos - you may be do not know or do not want to know that the only Middle East state where Christians population is growing is Israel, and Christians population is growing also in Jerusalem - the capital of the state of Israel. The rest of the Middle East countries - Arab countries - are killing and running off the remaining Christians and destroying churches with alarming speed. Ten more years from now and Christians will be found only in Israel in the Middle East.
