BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The PLO will not apply to join any more international organizations but will focus on full membership of the United Nations, the Palestinian Authority minister of foreign affairs said Thursday.

Some 107 countries voted Monday to admit Palestine as a member of UNESCO, and Riyad al-Malki told reporters in Ramallah that membership of the UN cultural agency was a step toward countering some historic injustices.

Israel and the US swiftly cut off funding to UNESCO. The Israeli government described the vote as a "tragedy" and decided to accelerate illegal settlement construction and withhold Palestinian tax revenue.

Al-Malki said Palestine would not seek to join any other agencies and that diplomatic efforts would concentrate on the bid to join the United Nations, which is under consideration by the Security Council.

Palestine needs nine votes from the 15-member council to join the world body, but the US has vowed to use its veto against the bid.

If the bid fails, the PLO will keep applying for membership until Palestine is accepted in the UN, al-Malki said.

The PLO will not turn to the General Assembly, which can upgrade Palestinian representation to that of an observer state, the minister said.

"We do not want, after all of these struggles, sacrifices, and efforts by the entire Palestinian people, to accept an observer state in the United Nations. We will not accept less than we deserve: a full member state."

Al-Malki said efforts to win votes in the Security Council were ongoing and that he would join a Palestinian delegation in New York for the council's meeting on Nov. 11.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Thursday that Palestinian efforts to join other UN agencies were "not beneficial for Palestine and not beneficial for anybody."

In an interview with The Associated Press, Ban said Palestinian applications to join other agencies could result in funding cuts affecting millions of people.
1 ) US to leave UN? / South Africa

Palestine should join all UN agencies, the US will withdraw funding from each and eventually not be a member of any UN agencies - the funding will need to come from Brazil, India, Russia, China and South Africa, but the world will cope. The only way Palestine will become a full member of the UNGA is when the US leaves which is no great loss really.

@2 Israel takes the lead for whining about the UN "they're so unfair waaaa" perhaps Israel should leave the UN too no great loss there either as to the US Abbas should keep on with his mission anyone who looks at this US law knows Obama had a choice, the law is at Presidential discretion

Malone #2. May be we should leave this earth to some where else so this earth will be without problems and your kind keep corrupting it. why it is not ok for us to demand our freedom and it is ok for you to corrupt this earth. Palestinians are the only nation in this world who do not belong to this world and out of the world systems and agencies. We are convicted of being victems and we are maying the price.

I used to have a great deal of respect for Malki till I read this piece which I hope is a fabrication!! The PA said on many occasions there were multiple options to eventually reach UN recognition. They never said anything about putting all their eggs in the security council. So this means if US vetoes which is likely, we will wait what... Another year or 20? The UNGA should be approached if the US vetoes and Palestine should pursue Israel at the ICJ/ICC. FULL STOP!!!

Has Ban ki Moon joined US Stete Department. He is talking for USA.UN membership will certainly help Palestinians to function as an independent nation. It is an expression of freedom for 10 million Palestinians.

US should leave UN agencies and let Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa and India to fund those agencies. It would be interesting to see how long agencies would last. I think everybody knows the answer. It is really time to defund UN.

So much for backbone! Application to UN agencies is an international form of resistance. It is also THE way to gather formal allies and supporters among the nations. It also brings the US before the 'court' of public opinion and possible action by the member states... So continue the path to a future!
Stand firm, Palestine. It is your right, not some earned privilege!

Wow. I would love it if the US would leave the UN, but that will never happen. I like your "no great loss" comment, but come on- what "world body" could carry any weight without the world's only (current) superpower?

12 ) RichardL / France
04/11/2011 18:12
CURRENT superpower (John/USA) yes. But how long can it go on not paying its bills. The US is morally and virtually economically bankrupt. I don't think it would be a great loss if it left the UN. I'm fed up with its sanctimonious hypocrisy and its warmongering. Somehow I don't think AIPAC will let though because it needs that veto.

The UN is now realizing that they could lose a lot of funding because of the pals....the little wimp, ban ki moon, will drop the pals like a hot potato...personally,I hope the USA cuts off ALL funding to the arab dominated UN and kicks them out of NYC.

#12: US is virtually bankrupt? Then it definitely should not pay for any agencies in the UN at all. The EU and China and the rest can pick up the tab. The US pays one-quarter of the budget now (it used to be higher). Let the US out and let Palestine in, and see how well things go. Anyway, RichardL, please let Palestine rescue you next time you are invaded. Get US troops out of NATO, out of Europe and no missile shield for Europe any more. Start paying for your own defense EU.
