GAZA CITY (Ma’an) -- Israeli gunfire injured four Palestinian workers early Thursday in the Gaza Strip, medical officials said.

Medical services spokesman Adham Abu Salmiya said a 14-year-old boy was seriously injured in the head while collecting stone aggregates.

A 22-year-old shepherd was seriously injured by shots to the back, the medics said.

A third person, aged 19, was moderately injured in his hand north of Beit Lahiya, medics said, and an 18-year-old was injured was hurt near the Erez crossing in a separate incident.

An Israeli military spokeswoman confirmed that two Palestinians were shot near the border area.

"This area is considered a combat zone used by terrorist organizations to execute attacks," the spokeswoman said. "For this reason, the IDF will not allow anyone to be present in it."

She added that the army first fired warning shots before firing at the workers' lower bodies.
