Palestinian government condemns Israeli escalation in Gaza

March 26, 2019 2:23 P.M. (Updated: March 27, 2019 10:09 A.M.)
RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- The caretaker government of Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah condemned the recent Israeli attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip and stressed that the attacks are “a continuation of Israel’s open war against the Palestinian people in the enclave,” on Tuesday.

The Palestinian government spokesperson, Yousef al-Mahmoud, said in a statement “The international community cannot remain silent to the Israeli airstrikes on Gaza,” which, he stressed, has been under siege for nearly 12 years.

Al-Mahmoud also urged the international community to take immediate action to safeguard its own laws.

Additionally, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee said in a press statement that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is “seeking to use these developments in the Israeli elections early next month, as well as for the benefit of Netanyahu personally, as well as his allies in the far right, by tightening the maritime and land blockade on the Gaza Strip.”

The PLO Executive Committee reaffirmed its firm commitment to the Palestinian people right to end the 1967 Israeli occupation of its territories, and its commitment to realize the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital and to guarantee the right of return for refugees in accordance with the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 194.
