Abbas assigns PM, requests form of new government

March 11, 2019 12:30 P.M. (Updated: April 14, 2019 10:40 A.M.)
RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas requested the Fatah movement's Central Committee member Muhammad Ishtayeh to form the new Palestinian government, on Sunday.

The government of Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah had submitted its resignation to Abbas late January 2019.

Abbas said, in his designation letter to Ishtayeh, that the new government's mission will be to speed up the reuniting of the occupied West Bank and besieged Gaza Strip, and to work towards holding legislative elections in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip to strengthen democracy.

New Prime Minister Ishtayeh will have to form a new government in three weeks, that could be extended to five if necessary.
