Ethiopian Airlines flight crashes after takeoff with 157 aboard

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- An Ethiopian Airlines flight with 149 passengers and eight crew members were thought to be aboard crashed shortly after takeoff from the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa to Kenya's capital of Nairobi, on Sunday morning.

The airline's statement said it believes 149 passengers and eight crew members were aboard a plane that crashed six minutes after taking off from Addis Ababa on a flight to Nairobi.

The statement added that the Boeing 737 crashed around Bishoftu or Debre Zeit, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of Addis Ababa, shortly after taking off at 8:38 a.m. local time.
The statement pointed out that “search and rescue operations are in progress and we have no confirmed information about survivors or any possible casualties.”
