Israel constructs 130 kilometer-long border wall with Lebanon

Sept. 6, 2018 4:58 P.M. (Updated: Sept. 10, 2018 2:07 P.M.)
JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- The Israeli army announced that so far it has built an 11-kilometer-long, nine-meter-tall concrete border wall along its northern border with Lebanon.

According to Hebrew-language news outlets, the wall is necessary in order to protect Israeli civilians from any Hezbollah attacks, however, the construction raised concerns for Lebanon, which fears the wall will trespass on its territory.

Sources claim that the Israeli army insists that the entire wall is being constructed within Israeli territory.

Sources said that a senior Israeli army officer warned the Lebanon-based movement Hezbollah, by saying "any of its forces who infiltrate into Israeli territory will not come back alive."

The Israeli officer stressed the importance of the massive wall and said Israel closely monitors Hezbollah, noting "we are prepared for the possibility that they will surprise us."

The Israeli officer added that "Hezbollah has been gaining strength in Lebanon in recent years and is virtually in control of the Lebanese army. Hezbollah also upgraded its capabilities through its fighting in Syria and gained confidence in the fighting, but today it can't enter Israeli territory with large forces and hold the ground."

The wall built so far is reportedly similar to a "smart fence," which is made up of concrete, steel, and barbed wire with sensors, cameras, information collection centers, and warning systems.

The cameras along the wall are connected to a war room to alert the Israeli army of any possible infiltration. The wall will also have lifting devices for the safe and secure maintenance of the cameras to prevent any possible firing towards Israeli soldiers.

Additionally, Israel aims to expand the wall to 130 kilometers, from its current 11 kilometers, and is expected to cost 1.7 billion shekels ($473 million).
