Palestinian teen succumbs to wounds sustained in Gaza marches

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- A 17-year-old Palestinian succumbed to wounds on Sunday that he had sustained during "The Great March of Return" protests in the besieged Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza confirmed that Ahmad Jihad al-Aydi succumbed on Sunday evening to wounds he had sustained during protests near the return camps alongside the eastern borders of the Gaza Strip.

The ministry added that al-Aydi’s death brings the total number of Palestinians killed in Gaza protests to 156 since March 30th. Additionally, thousands of Palestinians were injured by Israeli forces during the marches.

"The Great March of Return" protests were launched by thousands of Palestinian civilians in Gaza -- which has suffered from a decade-long Israeli siege -- who took to the borders to demand their right of return as refugees to their original homelands, now in present-day Israel.

The weeks-long civilian protest was initially planned to end on May 15, the 70th anniversary of the Nakba, or “catastrophe,” when over 750,000 Palestinians were forcibly expelled from their homes and made refugees with the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948.

However, as Palestinians demonstrated against the opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem, the protests came to a climax.

Israel has come under widespread international condemnation for its use of excessive force and live ammunition against unarmed protesters.
