Israeli police detain Palestinian at Qalandiya checkpoint for alleged knife possession

April 18, 2018 3:29 P.M. (Updated: April 19, 2018 4:47 P.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- A Palestinian resident of the Gaza Strip was reportedly arrested by Israeli police on Wednesday at the Qalandiya military checkpoint -- which separates Ramallah and Jerusalem -- according to Israeli news website Ynet.

Ynet reported that a 32-year-old Palestinian holder of Gaza residency, was arrested at the military checkpoint, allegedly in possession of a knife.

“The 32-year-old suspect was taken in for questioning. His motives are being checked,” Ynet said.

Scores of Palestinians have been detained over the past two years for alleged possession of knives since a wave of unrest began in October 2015.

While Israeli leaders often point to Palestinian “incitement” as the cause of such cases, and often attempt to connect them to the so-called “war on terror,” Palestinians have instead cited the daily frustrations and routine Israeli military violence imposed by Israel's nearly half century occupation of the Palestinian territory as main drivers for such incidents.
