BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces raided the Shufat refugee camp in occupied East Jerusalem before dawn on Wednesday, detaining 20 Palestinians, according to official palestinian Authority (PA)-owned Wafa news agency.

Wafa reported that Israeli forces raided a number of houses in the camp, “terrorizing women and children who were awaken at the sound of the forces breaking into their homes.”

Israeli forces reportedly ransacked several homes during the raid, causing material damage to furniture.

Twenty residents of the camp, who remained unidentified, were arrested, according to Wafa.

Israeli search and detention raids are a nightly occurrence in Palestinian cities, towns, and refugee camps across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

According to prisoners rights group Addameer, there were 6,119 Palestinian prisoners being held in Israeli jails as of February. Among those, 550 are residents of East Jerusalem.
