BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli police arrested a Palestinian man from occupied East Jerusalem on Monday for the alleged “brutal sexual assault and rape” of an American tourist in the Bethlehem district of the occupied West Bank.

According to Israeli police spokesperson Luba al-Samri, the American tourist, who is in her 20s, was volunteering in an orphanage in Bethlehem with the man from Jerusalem, also in his 20s.

The attack took place in the beginning of September, when the suspect broke into the woman’s room during the evening, closed the door, and attacked the woman “inflicting serious harm before running away,” al-Samri said.

Israeli Hebrew-language news site Walla News reported that the tourist had told Israeli investigators that the suspect, whom she volunteered with at the orphanage, had “raped her violently.”

Al-Samri described the attack as “brutal sexual assault and rape.”

Israeli police are extending the suspect’s remand for further investigations into the attack, al-Samri said.
