HEBRON (Ma’an) -- The Palestinian Committee of Prisoners' Affairs demanded the release of a 71-year-old Palestinian who was detained on Wednesday after Israeli forces raided his home in Hebron city in the southern occupied West Bank.

The committee released a statement saying that Israeli forces had detained Badran Jaber, 71, and transferred him to an unknown location.

Jaber suffers from heart complications and high blood pressure, the committee noted, and also struggles with diabetes. The committee demanded his immediate release.

Local and security sources told Ma’an on Wednesday that Israeli forces detained Jaber after raiding and searching his home in Hebron City, and said that Jaber was a leader in the left-wing Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). Jaber was one of at least 33 Palestinians that were detained during overnight raids between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

According to the committee, Jaber is a former prisoner of Israel who spent 12 years in Israeli prisons. Each of Jaber’s sons have also been imprisoned by Israel, while one of his sons, Wadie, is still being held at Israel’s Ofer detention center after being sentenced to four months in prison.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an she would look into reports on the detention, including the reasons behind Jaber being detained by Israeli forces.

In a report released on Tuesday, prisoners’ rights group Addameer, the Palestinian Committee of Prisoners’ Affairs, and Al-Mezan Center for Human Rights reported a sharp increase in Israeli detentions of Palestinians, with 880 Palestinians being detained in the month of July alone, 144 of whom were Palestinian children.

The report also noted that the number of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons has reached 6,400, including some 300 children and 450 Palestinians who are being held without charge or trial.

Rights group have often cited Israel’s routine imprisonment of Palestinians as a tool to erode Palestinian life in the occupied Palestinian territory. According to Addameer, 40 percent of the male Palestinian population has been detained by Israel at least one point in their lives.
