BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces shot and wounded a Palestinian driver at a checkpoint in the northern occupied West Bank on Sunday evening.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma'an that Israeli forces stationed at the Hamra checkpoint in the Nablus district stopped a Palestinian who "drove suspiciously" and asked him for his identity documents.

The driver said that he had forgotten his documents at home, the spokesperson said, and that as Israeli forces were following the Palestinian in his car back to his home for his documents, he attempted to flee.

Upon reaching a dead-end street, the spokesperson said, the Palestinian tried to flee on foot, at which point Israeli soldiers fired warning shots into the air before shooting at the man, injuring him lightly.

The spokesperson said that the man was evacuated to a hospital for treatment, although they were not aware of whether the man would be detained.
