Solidarity activists demonstrate in Belgium against Israel's separation wall

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The Belgian Labor Party and the Belgian Movement for Solidarity with the Palestinian People organized a demonstration on Sunday against Israel's illegal separation wall in the town of Torhout in the country's West Flanders province.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry released a statement saying that the demonstration was organized as part of an awareness campaign by the labor party marking the anniversaries of the Balfour Declaration, Nakba, and Naksa

Activists erected a symbolic wall in the city center near the City Hall and spray painted slogans similar to those on painted onto the Israeli separation wall -- which many Palestinians refer to as the “apartheid Wall” -- which runs through the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, cutting thousands of Palestinians off from their historical lands and preventing them from working on their agricultural lands. 

Political adviser of the Palestinian Mission to the European Union, Belgium, and Luxembourg Hassan Balaawi delivered a speech during the demonstration, detailing the many ways in which the wall has affected the Palestinian people's’ lives “at all levels,” highlighting that the wall was deemed illegal by the International Court of Justice. 

At the end of the demonstration, activists removed sections of the wall in a symbolic move, urging the international community to pressure Israel to tear down its separation wall.
