Israeli forces detain 8 Palestinians, seal roads during overnight West Bank raids

June 2, 2017 1:43 P.M. (Updated: June 2, 2017 11:07 P.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces detained eight Palestinians and allegedly seized weapons parts, ammunition and explosive devices during predawn raids in the occupied West Bank on Friday.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that six Palestinians were detained from Khirbet al-Aqaba in the Jenin district of the northern West Bank.

Hebrew-language news sites reported that Israeli forces seized weapons parts, ammunition and parts of explosive devices during the raid in Khirbet al-Aqaba. The Israeli army confirmed the reports to Ma’an.

The army spokesperson added that one Palestinian was detained from the Nablus-area village of Kafr Qaddum, also in the northern West Bank, while another Palestinian was detained from the southern West Bank city of Hebron.

Separately, Israeli forces closed the entrance to Hebron city and the Beit Einun junction, which connects Beit Einun with the nearby town of Sair on Thursday evening.

Locals told Ma’an that Israeli forces closed the entrances with iron gates, preventing vehicles from passing through.

An Israeli army spokesperson said they were looking into reports.

Israeli raids in Palestinian towns, villages, and refugee camps are a daily occurrence in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

The United Nations recorded an average of 95 weekly raids in the occupied West Bank in 2016, and an average of 67 raids a week so far 2017, while 87 Palestinians were detained over the past two weeks.

According to prisoners’ rights group Addameer, 6,300 Palestinians were held in Israeli prisons as of April, including 300 minors, 61 women, and 500 under administrative detention -- Israel's contested policy of imprisonment without charge or trial.
