Palestinian shot in the leg after Israeli raid sparks clashes in Jenin refugee camp

JENIN (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces shot a 20-year-old Palestinian in the leg with live ammunition Sunday morning, after an Israeli military detention raid into Jenin refugee camp sparked clashes between locals and Israeli soldiers.

Eyewitnesses told Ma’an that Israeli forces raided the camp before dawn and proceeded to search houses while firing live bullets and tear gas at Palestinians, sparking clashes with local youth.

Medical sources said that Yazan Muhammad Jaaisa, 20, was evacuated to Jenin governmental hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound in his leg, describing his injury as "moderate."

Israeli forces raided several houses, and detained Yassin al-Amuri, locals said.

An Israeli army spokesperson said that a total of six Palestinians were detained in Jenin in the raids, while a total of 14 Palestinians were detained overnight across the occupied West Bank.

The spokesperson said she was looking into reports of the clashes in Jenin refugee camp.

Israeli raids in Palestinian towns, villages, and refugee camps are a daily occurrence in the occupied West Bank. Due to the typically aggressive nature of the raids, clashes often erupt between local Palestinian youth who throw stones and are met in response with live fire, rubber-coated steel bullets, and tear gas, often resulting in serious, sometimes fatal, injuries.

Israeli forces shot and killed a 19-year-old Muhammad Mahmoud Abu Khalifa in Jenin refugee camp during clashes in January, when at least five other Palestinian youth were hospitalized for gunshot injuries.

Rights groups have routinely condemned Israeli authorities for their use of excessive force against Palestinians, including minors, during incidents that did not warrant a violent response.

Since the beginning of the year, Israeli forces and settlers have killed 22 Palestinians, several of whom being shot dead amid clashes with Israeli forces -- most recently on Friday, when a 23-year-old Saba Abu Ubeid was shot dead in the village of Nabi Saleh during a march in support of some 1,300 Palestinians on a mass hunger strike across Israeli prisons.
