Abbas meets with Egyptian counterpart in Cairo

April 29, 2017 7:35 P.M. (Updated: April 29, 2017 10:39 P.M.)
CAIRO (Ma'an) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met with his Egyptian counterpart Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo on Saturday afternoon.

Official sources told Ma'an that Abbas and al-Sisi addressed the case of the hundreds of Palestinian prisoners jailed by Israel who have been on hunger strike for the past 13 days. The two maintained that Arab states and the international community at large should support the hunger strikers and protect them from Israeli oppression.

Spokesman for the Egyptian presidency Alaa Yousif said that al-Sisi affirmed that Egypt would continue efforts to reach a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which would grant Palestinians the right to establish an independent state on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Yousif added that the Palestinian president reiterated that he would continue consultations with Egypt, "which has been playing a major role in the question of Palestine."

According to the Egyptian spokesman, Abbas's visit to Cairo was also made to coordinate the position of the Palestinian Authority and the Egyptian government, ahead of Abbas’s first meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington to take place this week.

Accompanying the Palestinian president on the visit was Fatah Central Committee member Azzam al-Ahmad, head of the Palestinian General Intelligence Majed Faraj, and Palestinian ambassador to Egypt Jamal al-Shubki.
