Israeli forces open fire at Palestinian fishermen in Gaza

GAZA (Ma’an) -- Israeli naval forces opened fire at Palestinian fishing boats off the coast of Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza Strip on Monday morning, local sources said, with no injuries reported.

Palestinian sources said the fishermen were forced to sail back ashore for safety.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma'an they were looking into reports.

The Israeli army regularly opens fire on unarmed Palestinian fishermen, shepherds, and farmers along the border areas if they approach Israel’s unilaterally declared “buffer zone,” which lies on both the land and sea sides of Gaza.

The practice has in effect destroyed much of the agricultural and fishing sector of the blockaded coastal enclave.
