Israeli forces close 2 roads in Ramallah district

Feb. 2, 2017 12:42 P.M. (Updated: Feb. 2, 2017 1:57 P.M.)
RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces closed Route 60 in the Ramallah district of the occupied West Bank on Thursday, while continuing the closure of the Beit El (DCO) checkpoint for the second consecutive day.

Israeli forces closed the part of Route 60 that connects the Mikhmas junction in the north to Wadi al-Haramiya junction in the south.

The Beit El checkpoint was also closed for the second consecutive day.

According to locals, these closures were being implemented as part of a "security campaign" as Israeli authorities have cautioned Israeli passengers about the dangers of roads shared with Palestinians.

It was unclear as of Thursday what prompted the "security" operation. An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma'an they would look into reports on the closures.

Palestinian communities are subjected to routine closures by Israeli military forces for purported "security reasons," an act which rights groups have denounced as "collective punishment" of an entire population.
