2 Palestinians injured by unknown explosive device in Gaza

Jan. 30, 2017 10:02 A.M. (Updated: Jan. 30, 2017 2:54 P.M.)
GAZA (Ma’an) -- Two Palestinians were injured when an unknown explosive device detonated in al-Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip on Sunday evening.

Ministry of Health in Gaza spokesman Ashraf Qaddura said that one of the Palestinians was moderately injured, while the other was in critical condition and had to undergo surgery to amputate several fingers.

The two Palestinians were being treated at the Shuhada al-Aqsa hospital in central Gaza, while security forces were investigating in the incident.

While the nature of the explosion remained unclear as of Monday morning, more than 7,000 unexploded ordnance were left throughout the Gaza Strip following the 2014 war between Israel and Palestinian militant groups, according to officials of the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the Palestinian territories (OCHA).

A 2012 report published by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights said that 111 civilians, 64 of whom were children, were casualties of unexploded ordnance between 2009 and 2012, reaching an average of four every month in 2012.
