Israeli court sentences Palestinian to 17 years in prison over stabbing attack

Oct. 26, 2016 9:51 P.M. (Updated: Oct. 27, 2016 12:28 P.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- An Israeli court in Jerusalem sentenced a Palestinian on Wednesday to 17 years in prison for carrying out a stabbing attack in 2015 in which an Israeli soldier was moderately injured.

The court also imposed on Saed Muhammad Qumbuz, a resident of the Old City of occupied East Jerusalem, a 50,000 shekel ($13,000) fine.

Qumbuz was convicted of carrying out a stabbing attack on an Israeli soldier in Jerusalem on Dec. 27, 2015, causing moderate wounds.

Since a wave of violence spread across the occupied Palestinian last year, marked by alleged, attempted, and actual small-scale attacks committed by Palestinians on Israeli targets, Israeli authorities have come under harsh criticism for severe punitive measures imposed on innocent Palestinian civilians by launching massive detention campaigns, demolishing the homes of slain attackers' families, and withholding the bodies of Palestinians that have been killed.

Since October 2015, 235 Palestinians have been killed by Israelis and 34 Israelis have been killed by Palestinians.
