Israeli shot and killed near border with Egypt

Oct. 25, 2016 4:35 P.M. (Updated: Oct. 25, 2016 8:26 P.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- An Israeli man was shot and killed in southern Israel near the border with Egypt on Tuesday afternoon.

According to an initial statement from an Israeli army spokesperson, the man was shot and wounded adjacent to the Egyptian border at around 3:30 p.m., and after being evacuated by an Israeli air force helicopter to Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, the man succumbed to his wounds.

The man was reportedly doing maintenance work on the border fence while he was shot. According to Israeli news site Ynet, he was contracted by the Israeli Defense Ministry.

"Initial assessments show that the fire was not the result of an attack, but of a misunderstanding," Ynet reported.

The news site quoted Egyptian security officials as saying that the shooting came from Egyptian border police who were exchanging fire with drug smuggler on the border between Israel and Egypt.
