Palestinian dies fighting with ISIS in Libya

Oct. 24, 2016 6:19 P.M. (Updated: Oct. 24, 2016 6:19 P.M.)
GAZA (Ma’an) -- A Palestinian from the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip died Monday morning while fighting with the Islamic State group (ISIS) in Sirte, Libya, according to local Palestinian sources who identified the man as Muhammad Adel al-Zamli Abu Moyad.

Sirte is the only city that ISIS controls in Libya, and forces allied to the UN-backed Libyan government in Tripoli have been battling for some six months to gain control of the city, with the help of US airstrikes as well as special forces from the US, the UK, and France since August.

A number of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip have reportedly died while fighting with ISIS in Syria and Iraq as well.

In August, Ma'an reported that a resident of the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun died while fighting with ISIS in Syria, after leaving Gaza some five years ago.

Meanwhile, Israeli police said in October that six Palestinian residents of the Shufat refugee camp and the neighboring village of Anata in the occupied West Bank district of Jerusalem were indicted for alleged involvement with ISIS and planning to carry out attacks in Israel and Jerusalem. Some of whom had also allegedly attempted -- but failed -- to reach Egypt and Syria to join ISIS fighters there.
