Israeli forces shoot, injure 3 Palestinians near Gaza border

Sept. 23, 2016 6:00 P.M. (Updated: Sept. 24, 2016 3:44 P.M.)
GAZA (Ma'an) -- At least three Palestinians were injured with live fire on Friday in clashes with Israeli forces along the border between the besieged Gaza Strip and Israel.

Medical sources said two youths were injured east of Gaza City, while a third was injured by Israeli snipers east of al-Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that “violent riots” occurred on Friday near the border in the central and northern Gaza Strip, and that Israeli forces used “riot dispersal means” at the demonstrators “in order to prevent infiltration” into Israel.

The spokesperson could not specify which riot dispersal means were used, but confirmed the use of live fire east of Gaza City when a number of Palestinians breached the “buffer zone” close to the border.

Palestinians often come under fire from military forces near the “buffer zone” between the Palestinian enclave and Israel, as the Israeli military has not made clear the precise area of the designated zone.

Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have demonstrated near the border with Israel nearly every Friday to show solidarity with what Palestinians in Gaza have termed the “Jerusalem Intifada” taking place in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Dozens of Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip since the unrest spread in October, the majority shot dead during clashes on the Gaza-Israel border.

More than 177 Gazans have been injured by Israeli forces since the start of 2016, the vast majority during clashes that broke out with the Israeli military during protests since October, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

The nearly nine-year Israeli blockade has plunged the Gaza Strip’s more than 1.8 million Palestinians into poverty. The destruction from three Israeli offensives over the past six years and slow reconstruction due to the blockade led the UN in September to warn that Gaza could be “uninhabitable” by 2020.
