Israeli forces detain youth, reportedly close checkpoints around East Jerusalem

Sept. 15, 2016 6:52 P.M. (Updated: Sept. 15, 2016 7:53 P.M.)
RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces Thursday detained a Palestinian youth inside a store in the neighborhood of Hizma east of Jerusalem over suspicions that the youth had been planning an attack, as Israeli forces reportedly closed military checkpoints around occupied East Jerusalem due to “security threats.”

Locals told Ma’an that Israeli forces raided several stores in Hizma, detained a Palestinian youth, and confiscated his vehicle, adding that the Israeli army had been searching for the youth since early Thursday over suspicions that he was reportedly planning an attack in Jerusalem.

The Palestinian youth has not been identified.

Israeli forces also confiscated surveillance camera footage from inside the store, locals said, while soldiers were heavily deployed on the road connecting Hizma with the neighborhood of Jabaa.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces closed military checkpoints surrounding East Jerusalem and imposed heavy restrictions on vehicle movement in and out of the city.

Hebrew-language media reported “security alerts” earlier in the day regarding suspicions of an attack potentially being carried out in the city.

Israeli forces had been heavily deployed throughout the streets of the city and at nearby checkpoints, according to a Ma’an reporter, adding that Israel had closed the neighborhoods of Jabaa, Hizma, Anata, Khan al-Ahmar, and al-Zaayim.

Following the youth's detention, locals said Israeli forces removed checkpoints that had been set up around Hizma.

An Israeli police spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.

The occupied West Bank has seen an increase in military road closures since October, when a wave of unrest first erupted across the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel, with 222 Palestinians killed by Israelis and 32 Israelis killed by Palestinians since, resulting in periodic military blockades of Palestinian villages, towns, checkpoints, and entire districts.
