Palestinian released, placed under house arrest after serving 14 year sentence in Israeli prisons

JERUSALEM (Ma’an) – An Israeli judge Tuesday ordered the release of a Palestinian from the occupied East Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabal al-Mukabbir who was redetained four days after being released from a 14-year sentence in Israeli prisons, according to local sources.

Israeli Magistrate Court’s judge ordered the release of Jerusalemite prisoner Sufyan Fakhri Abdo from Israeli prison and imposed 14 days of house detention and a 10,000 shekel ($2,653) fine on him.

Abdo’s father told Ma’an that his son was detained on August 19, four days after being released following a 14-year sentence in Israeli prison after Israeli authorities accused him of inciting violence during a march in Jabal al-Mukabbir.

According to the father, the march was organized as a peaceful demonstration honoring his son after spending 14 years in Israeli prisons. Palestinians reportedly marched through the streets of the neighborhood, but did not approach any illegal settlements in the area.

His father was also summoned by Israeli intelligence on Monday evening and held at a police station for two hours for interrogations. He was given five days of house arrest after he was released.

The Israeli magistrate court judge ordered the release of ten Palestinian prisoners from Jabal al-Mukabbir and imposed house detention order for seven days and a 750 shekel fine ($199) for each Palestinian released.
