PA: Czech Education Ministry to stop using textbook defining Jerusalem as Israeli capital

Aug. 17, 2016 2:42 P.M. (Updated: Aug. 17, 2016 4:54 P.M.)
RAMALLAH (Ma’an) – The Czech Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports notified the Palestinian Authority embassy in Prague of their decision to stop using educational textbooks that refer to Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, according to a statement released Tuesday by the Palestinian Foreign Ministry.

The Palestinian Ambassador to the Czech Republic Khalid al-Atrash was quoted in the statement, confirming that the textbook used since 2011 would not be used in schools in the country anymore, adding that the textbook would not be circulated again in 2017 unless the publishers correct the statement that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.

The decision was made after the Palestinian embassy contacted Czech ministers and requested that they amend the textbooks. The move also marked a significant challenge to Israel’s attempts to unilaterally declare the whole of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

According to international frameworks for a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, East Jerusalem is internationally recognized as the capital of any future Palestinian state and is an integral part of Palestinian territory.

However, despite this international consensus, the Israeli government has made a concerted effort to expand illegal Israeli settlements deep into Palestinian territory in Jerusalem in order to change facts on the ground which would prevent a contiguous Palestinian state.
