Israeli forces demolish structures in Hebron

Aug. 5, 2016 6:49 P.M. (Updated: Aug. 5, 2016 6:49 P.M.)
HEBRON (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces reportedly demolished two structures used for agricultural purposes and a water well on Thursday evening in the Farsh al-Hawa area of western Hebron in the southern occupied West Bank.

Owner of the structures and the land, Nasser Qabajeh, said that the two structures, which spanned a total space of 40 square meters, were built in 1954.

Qabajeh added that Israeli forces also leveled the 15 square meter farm in which the well was located, including an outdoor bathroom that was built two years ago.

A spokeswoman for Israel’s Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), which is responsible for implementing Israeli government policy in the occupied West Bank, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the demolitions.

Executive Committee Member of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Dr. Hanan Ashrawi released a statement Sunday calling on international powers to “end Israel’s dangerous lawlessness.”

In her statement, Ashrawi cited what she called Israel’s “systematic policy of ethnic cleansing and forced displacement with its demolition of Palestinian homes and structures.”

According to UN documentation, 684 Palestinian structures have been demolished by Israeli forces since the start of 2016, while 990 Palestinians have been made homeless as a direct result of Israel's demolition campaigns.

“With its official policy of destroying Palestinian homes and lives, Israel is confirming its aim of continuing the Nakba of 1948 by displacing Palestine and replacing it with ‘Greater Israel’,” Ashrawi said.
