More than 1,500 olive trees burn in Tulkarem district fires

TULKAREM (Ma'an) -- Palestinian civil defense crews extinguished fires which burned hundreds of olive trees in the northern occupied West Bank district of Tulkarem on Wednesday night.

The civil defense said in a statement that a fire near the village of Kur reached hundreds of dunums (square kilometers) of land, burning 1,500 olive trees planted in the area before fire extinguishing teams were able to control it.

The statement added that civil defense crews also put out a fire near the village of Izbat Shufa, in which 70 trees were partially burned.

In addition to being a strong national symbol for Palestinians, olive trees form an important part of the Palestinian agricultural sector.
