JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli soldiers physically assaulted and interrogated a Palestinian in the neighborhood of Sur Bahir in occupied East Jerusalem on Saturday, head of a Jerusalem committee for prisoners' families said.

Committee head Amjad Abu Asab told Ma’an that soldiers assaulted fellow committee member Alaa al-Haddad, causing him to pass out.

Al-Haddad was then taken to a police station for interrogation before being taken to a hospital on the condition that he attend interrogation at a later time, Abu Asab said.

The Israeli army was not immediately available for comment.

Reports of assault and mistreatment by Israeli forces of Palestinians during detention are common. Rights groups have long argued that such treatment is facilitated by Israel, as state organs repeatedly refuse to acknowledge the existence of the systemic abuse of Palestinian detainees.
