BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces and a Palestinian gunman exchanged fire at the al-Jalama checkpoint in the northern occupied West Bank district of Jenin on Friday, an Israeli army spokesperson told Ma'an.

The spokesperson said shots were fired at Israeli forces at the military-controlled border crossing, who returned fire.

The gunman was shot in the incident, with no further details available on whether he had been detained or his medical condition.

No Israelis were injured in the exchange.

Israeli media reported that the Palestinian fled to Jenin city and was then detained by Palestinian Authority police.

Since the start of October, least three Palestinians have been shot dead at the al-Jalama military checkpoint, which is located south of Afula and one of the only exits out of the northern area of the occupied West Bank.

Three Palestinians were detained in Afula by Israeli police Thursday when police reportedly found three butcher knives in the groups' possession.
