Israeli forces, settlers, Palestinians clash in Hebron

Oct. 11, 2015 11:03 A.M. (Updated: Oct. 11, 2015 11:04 A.M.)
HEBRON (Ma’an) – Clashes between Palestinians and Israeli settlers broke out Saturday evening in the southern West Bank district of Hebron near the Jabal Juhar neighborhood outside of the illegal Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba after Israeli settlers attacked several Palestinian neighborhoods in the area, locals said.

Locals said the settlers attacked the nearby neighborhoods of al-Salayma, Abu al-Hussein and Ras Jabir as well as Jabal Juhar.

“Crowds of settlers have gathered near Kiryat Arba settlement and they are cursing Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, on megaphones. They are provoking Muslims and shouting anti-Palestinian slogans,” an eyewitness told Ma’an at the time.

The Jabal Juhar neighborhood, in the southern quarter of Hebron city, is under Israeli control, therefore Palestinian forces have no jurisdiction. For help, locals said they called to surrounding areas, prompting young Palestinian men from neighboring villages to gather and confront the attacking settlers.

Israeli forces then intervened in the confrontation, shooting off tear gas and rubber-coated steel bullets at Palestinians. The young men were injured with the rubber bullets, while several other suffered from tear gas inhalation.

Israeli media outlets reported that a 14-year-old settler was hit with a stone in the head during the clashes.

Separately, in the western area of the Hebron district, Israeli forces shot and injured a young Palestinian man in the foot on Saturday evening during clashesnear the Khursa crossroads south of Dura village, local sources said.

The young man, who has not been identified, was shot in the foot with live fire.

In regards to the incident, an Israeli army spokesperson said "shots were fired toward Israeli forces and forces fired back," adding that a hit was confirmed.

Witnesses said young Palestinian men hurled stones at the Israeli soldiers who responded with live fire, rubber-coated bullets and tear gas.
