Israel raids home of Jerusalem stab suspect, clashes in hospital

Oct. 7, 2015 4:05 P.M. (Updated: Oct. 7, 2015 8:19 P.M.)
JERUSALEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces and intelligence officers raided the home of a Palestinian teenager accused of stabbing an Israeli man in occupied East Jerusalem's Old City on Wednesday, witnesses said.

Locals told Ma'an that large numbers of Israeli special unit forces broke into the home of Shuroq Salah Dwayat, 18, in the neighborhood of Sur Bahir and evicted the family while raiding the property.

Israeli forces fired tear gas canisters in the neighborhood during the raid, with clashes breaking out between local youths, relatives of Dwayat, and Israeli forces.

Separately, altercations erupted in Hadassah hospital, where Dwayat is being treated, between family members and Israeli border police.

At least one family member was injured, relatives told Ma'an.

Medics told Ma'an that Dwayat was shot four times in the upper body and is currently in a stable but serious condition and handcuffed to a hospital bed.

Israeli police said she stabbed an Israeli man in the Old City, who responded by opening fire at her. Israeli media said the man, 35, sustained light injuries.

The latest stabbing attack comes amid escalating tensions in occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank, with days of violent clashes injuring over 600 Palestinians over the weekend.

On Oct. 3, two Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli forces in occupied East Jerusalem's Old City for allegedly carrying out stabbing attacks against Israelis.

Mohannad Shafiq Halabi, 19, stabbed and killed two Israelis in the Old City and was shot dead on scene.

Hours later, Fadi Samir Mustafa Alloun, 19, was shot dead after reportedly attempting to stab Israelis. Video footage of the incident went viral shortly after, suggesting Alloun's death came after Israelis egged on Israeli police forces to shoot the teen.
