JENIN (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian man during clashes that broke out following an Israeli raid into the town of Birqin west of Jenin in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday morning.

Muhammad Ahmad Alawneh, 21, was shot with a live bullet in his chest.

He was taken to a hospital for treatment where he underwent surgery, but later succumbed to his wounds, medical sources told Ma'an.

Alawneh is the 16th Palestinian to be killed by Israeli forces this year.

During the clashes, Israeli forces fired tear-gas canisters and stun grenades, as well as live rounds.

Sources added that Israeli forces detained journalist Muhammad Ali Atiq during the raid, which was one of many carried out across the occupied West Bank overnight.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said that 20 Palestinians in total were detained.

She confirmed the arrest in Birqin, but said that Alawneh had been injured by Israeli border police.

An Israeli police spokesperson could not be reached for comment.

A military source told Israeli public radio that "the army and border guards carried out an operation in the village to arrest wanted Palestinians.

"Stones and Molotov cocktails were thrown and tires were burned," and "forces used riot-dispersal means," including tear gas and rubber-coated bullets against the stone-throwers.

The sources claimed that no live ammunition was used.

Since the beginning of 2014, Israeli forces have injured an average of 35 Palestinians every week.

Israeli settlers, including those living in occupied East Jerusalem, have carried out a further two weekly attacks on Palestinians, and an average of four incidents of damage to Palestinian property every week.

AFP contributed to this report.

16th Palestinian to be killed by Israeli forces this year......16 less to feed, clothe and house.

Two / truths
-1- Israeli forces have injured of 35 a week, but all Palestinians were injured in peace-keeping operations, or in self-defense, while
-2- Palestinian forces have injured Israelis too, and tried to injure 100s more, but none of these were related to peace-keeping or self-defense !!

My heart goes out to the murdered Palestinian, Muhammad Ahmad Alawneh, 21. May he rest in Peace. Another summary execution without trial by israel. Dont israelis have any sense of justice? Retorical question the answer is no. American Jews are abandoning israel. With good reason.

@Zena / Germany Israel don't feed, cloth or house the Palestinians. Israel can't afford to feed their own people. Haven't you watch organizations on the web asking for donations to feed hungry Israelis.

If the Israeli occupation obeyed INTERNATIONAL LAW and withdrew from all occupied territories, removed the illegal settlements and wall, and lifted the illegal siege of Gaza maybe Palestinians wouldn't have to exercise their LEGITIMATE right to RESIST OCCUPATION.

Does the twenty year jail sentence for throwing stones, replace the shoot to kill punishment?

The Only Reason / Truth
There have been "routine arrest raids throughout the West Bank by Israeli forces" is because terror attacks have become routine throughout the West Bank by Islamic forces, and Palestinians will be allowed to live in peace, when they allow Jews to do the same !!

If the EU had such Palestinian-like, stone-throwing civilians, who attacked both police and other civilians, and started causing many fatalities,
Then THE EU WOULD HAVE MADE HARSHER
anti-stone-throwing LAWS far quicker than Israel !!
