Palestinian shot, injured after stabbing policeman in East Jerusalem

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- A Palestinian stabbed and seriously wounded an Israeli border policeman at Damascus Gate outside East Jerusalem's Old City on Sunday, before the officer then shot his attacker, leaving him in critical condition.

Israeli police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld said that the policeman had received stab wounds to his neck and been moved to hospital in critical condition.

Although the Palestinian -- identified by prisoners' rights group Addameer as 18-year-old Yaser Yasin al-Tarawah -- was initially reported dead, Rosenfeld later said he had been moved to Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem.

A Hadassah Medical Center spokeswoman said that he was "in a very, very bad condition," but that he was still alive and undergoing surgery.

Witnesses told Ma'an that he had been shot six times by the policeman, and a paramedic confirmed seeing "gunshot wounds to his upper body."

Coming from the village of Sair in Hebron, the Palestinian had entered Israel illegally and was not among the tens of thousands of Palestinians given Israeli permission to enter East Jerusalem over the holy month of Ramadan.

The policeman was taken to Shaare Zedek medical center, where Israeli news site Ynet quoted a doctor, Ofer Merin, as saying: "We're in the first stages of treatment. The soldier arrived an hour and a half ago in critical condition with multiple wounds.

"The main wounds were to his neck and chest, with one to his heart. Currently, he is stable and not bleeding, but his life is still in danger."

Rosenfeld posted a photo of a bloody knife on his Twitter feed, saying it was the weapon used by the Palestinian.

He said that the area had been cordoned off for an hour and a half following the incident, adding that an investigation was underway.

Israeli forces later raided al-Tawarah's family home in Sair, where they interrogated family members before leaving without any arrests.

The attack was the latest in a string of attacks by Palestinians on Israeli forces and civilians in recent months, and comes two days after a 25-year-old Israeli civilian was shot dead while driving in the occupied West Bank near Ramallah.

Sunday's incident also came two days after the first Friday of Ramadan, which saw around 80,000 Palestinians from the occupied West Bank and Gaza cross into East Jerusalem to pray at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound.

Israel relaxed normally severe restrictions on the movement of Palestinians into Israel for the occasion, citing a relative security lull and good cooperation with the Palestinian Authority.

There will be no Palestine so long as Palestinians embrace war, not peace. Their lawfare tactics will backfire and in the end they will have no choice but to comply with international law and negotiate a peace treaty instead of trying to impose one.

This 18-year-old Yaser Yasin al-Tarawah is just an Arab child, and should be released, and not stand
before the courts on a manslaughter charge.

This story is not in ANY of the main media outlets. CNN, CBS, BBC, NBC, FOX, none of them even mention this story.
Seems world has lost interest in the Israeli-Palestinians conflict.

@ Brian / USA
The world continues to encourage Palestinians not to compromise, so
Palestinians will continue to "embrace war, not peace", so instead
Israel should "try to impose a peace treaty", by
Choosing borders for Palestine, and closing them off completely (movement, import/export, etc.), until Peace !!

the Palestinian people call this a natural form of resistance. In reality it's another form of terrorism. The sooner they are removed from Israel the sooner Israeli people will enjoy life without terror and subversive activities and constant law breaking deviant behavior.

despicable reporting from Maan
Maan should be ashamed of itself making it look like Palestinians are attacking israeli occupiers every minute while Israel is cute and cool and does itself to help Palestinians.

Palestine / world
As long as Israel continues to oppress the Palestinians, incidents like this are a normal reaction that result from the oppression. If Israel doesn't want any of its citizens to be harmed then they need to start to aknowledge a Palestinian state, with Palestinians given equal rights as Israeli!

Israel already has its legitimate Borders. Those it declared as Sovereign in accordance with the Partition Plan. Had Israel abided by those borders there would be no rockets or conflict.
