Israeli forces injure 2 east of Jerusalem

JERUSALEM (Ma’an) – Two young Palestinian men were injured Friday evening during clashes with Israeli forces in the town of Abu Dis east of Jerusalem.

Bassam Bahar, a lawyer who chairs a local committee to defend the lands of Abu Dis, told Ma'an that clashes broke near Mafraq al-Jabal area of Abu Dis between young Palestinian men and the Israeli forces, who fired tear gas canisters, stun grenades and rubber-coated bullets

Ten Palestinians were hit by rubber-coated bullets, one of whom was hit in the head and another receiving several rounds to the abdomen, sources in the Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance service said, adding that several others suffered from excessive tear gas inhalation.

An Israeli army spokesperson did not have immediate comment on the incident.

Separately, clashes broke in the nearby town of al-Izariya after witnesses say Israeli forces stormed the area firing tear gas canisters haphazardly in the town's center. Local young men hurled stones and empty bottles at the forces in return.

In the al-Isawiya neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem, undercover Israeli officers detained a young man Ahmad Darwish during clashes with Israeli forces in the town.

Friday's clashes come amid what rights groups allege is disproportionate and unnecessary force used against unarmed Palestinians by Israeli forces.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported 64 Palestinians injured by Israeli forces in the West Bank during the last week of May, including nine children.

In 2014, OCHA documented 16,446 Palestinians injured by Israeli forces, around two-thirds of which were injured during last summer's war in the Gaza Strip, the remaining third taking place in the West Bank.
