Israeli forces shoot, critically injure Palestinian teen in Gaza

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- A 17-year-old Palestinian is in critical condition after he was shot in the head by Israeli forces in northern Beit Lahiya in the Gaza Strip on Friday, amid reports that Israeli forces also shot and injured a Palestinian fisherman.

Ashraf al-Qidra, spokesman for the Ministry of Health in Gaza, said the 17-year-old boy had been shot in the head and had been moved for treatment.

An Israeli army spokeswoman confirmed the shooting.

She said that a group of Palestinians had been seen "approaching the security fence" and that Israeli forces arrived shortly afterwards.

She alleged that the Israeli soldiers called them to halt, and fired warning shots when they "refused to comply."

Israeli forces then fired at their "lower extremities" and hit the "main instigator" of the group, she said. Asked what he had been instigating, she said the group had been "attempting to breach the security fence."

A Palestinian fisherman was also reported to have been shot by Israeli forces while fishing in the sea off Gaza.

The army spokeswoman said that Israeli forces fired on his boat when it went beyond the designated fishing zone.

She said that the naval forces "fired warning shots," but opened fire when the "suspects continued to advance." She said the vessel then returned to shore.

The shooting of the 17-year-old comes less than a month after another teenage boy, 14-year-old Fadi Abu Mandil was critically injured by a stray Israeli bullet while studying in his home in the central Gaza Strip.

Abu Mandil was moved to Ramallah on Tuesday last week to undergo surgery in his spine, as his family said the boy was unable to walk.

Israeli forces have repeatedly opened fire on Gazans since the ceasefire agreement signed Aug. 26, 2014 that ended a devastating 50-day war between Israel and Hamas.

The attacks come despite Israeli promises at the end of the ceasefire to ease restrictions on Palestinian access to both the sea and the border region near the "security buffer zone."

Probably both the "teen", and the "fisherman", were engaged in some Islamic militant related activities, despite Hamas' "promises at the end of the ceasefire", so the shootings were justifiable.

What is it that they want ? After the recent publication of the Breaking the Silence report on last summer's operation, are these actions intended to communicate a message ? Never has the ICC seemed so important.

Clearly Egypt is unable or unwilling to act on the hundreds of Israeli breaches of the Egyptian-brokered ceasefire. Unless the international community steps into the breach, the blood from what comes next will be on their hands. ENOUGH. YA BASTA.

The IDF are in bad need for target practice skills. They seem to be incompetent. According to the spokesman , "they ordered them to halt , when they did not comply , they shot at their lower extremities). Somehow the kid was shot in the HEAD. For the IDF , that is an "upper extremity".

@Tibi/Tubas: i notice you use often the word "probably"... the shot in the head is not probably but made on the same assumption. Why call this "some Islamic militant related activities"? What about blockade, occupation related? Israel broke already many times the ceasefire. Resistance is justifiable.

It is the Israeli occupation forces here clearly engaged in terrorist activity - Palestinian fishers/farmers simply trying to make a living. Anyone with common sense can see that. Israel violates the ceasefire almost every day.

How old is this "17-year-old boy" actually?
Wasn't he a Hamas member?
Wasn't he trying to cross or demage the border fance?

re Tibi #1: '...so the shootings were justifiable.' Sure, Tibi. Why don't you just face facts? You're part of a vicious Nazi state.

The ICC will Not even consider such individual shootings of suspected militants. It will however, consider Hamas' targeting of civilians and using human-shields. And since Palestinians signed ICC conventions, they are far more vulnerable to ICC rulings, than Israel !!

An execution for Walking-while-Palestinian in sight of Israeli forces. A capital crime. And another attempted execution for Fishing-while-Palestinian.

Could someone tell me what kind of machine guns the IDF use?
