Palestinian shot in Jerusalem after attempted stabbing

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli security guards shot a Palestinian man on Monday in Jerusalem after he attempted to stab passers-by at a light rail station near the French Hill settlement, police said.

A security guard told police the Palestinian had "attacked him from behind" before running towards people waiting at the station, Samri said.

Several guards responded by firing warning shots into the air and the man was shot in the lower legs, Israeli police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld told Ma'an, adding the incident is still under investigation.

The attacker, whom police identified as a 35-year-old Palestinian from Shuafat refugee camp in occupied East Jerusalem, was lightly wounded, Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said in a statement.

Nobody was hurt apart from the Palestinian who was taken to Hadassah hospital in Ein Kerem for treatment, she added.

The incident took place at the light rail stop in Givat HaMivtar, close to the Jewish-only settlement of French Hill.

Israel took over East Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War, later annexing the area in a move never recognized by the international community, and continues to occupy it's many Palestinian-majority neighborhoods today.

The light rail service began operating in 2011 along a 14-kilometre (nine-mile) route which begins at Mount Herzl and passes through West Jerusalem before heading through the east of the city and ending at the settlement of Pisgat Zeev.

Land belonging to Palestinians in Shuafat was confiscated in 2001 by the Jerusalem Municipality for the construction of the light rail, which will eventually link more illegal settlements in occupied East Jerusalem to West Jerusalem upon its expected completion in 2016.

There have been a spate of attacks on Israeli military and civilians in recent weeks and months. In the last month, two attacks were carried out on Israeli military in the West Bank and two in occupied East Jerusalem, both near checkpoints.

Light to moderate injuries were reported from the attacks, with no fatalities.

In the same month period, Israeli forces killed seven Palestinians, wounded 173, arrested more than 375 Palestinians, and detained at least 266 throughout occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank, according to the PLOInternational Relations Department.

The 35 year old attempted murder, and:
-1- his actions warranted being shot to death (rather than the legs), and
-2- his actions (under the law) also warrant his home be demolished !!
