Israeli forces close Qalandiya checkpoint between Jerusalem, Ramallah

May 3, 2015 12:42 P.M. (Updated: May 3, 2015 6:07 P.M.)
RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces on Sunday shut down Qalandiya checkpoint between Jerusalem and Ramallah denying all entry in both directions.

Sources told Ma'an that a state of alert had been declared inside the checkpoint and that Israeli soldiers had forced all Palestinian drivers and pedestrians away from the crossing.

It remains unclear why the checkpoint was closed.

Asked for comment, an Israeli army spokeswoman told Ma'an she was looking into the closure.

Palestinians from the West Bank can normally only cross into Jerusalem through Qalandiya and other checkpoints if they have a special permit from the Israeli Civil Administration, while Palestinians who reside in Jerusalem and have Israeli identification can freely travel into the West Bank.
