JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli authorities on Wednesday removed Muhammad Abu Khdeir's name from an Israeli list of terror victims following demands by his family.

Abu Khdeir's father told Ma'an that on Tuesday the family called the Israeli National Insurance Institute, which administers the memorial wall in Jerusalem's Mount Herzl national cemetery, demanding that Muhammad's name be removed from the list located in Mount Herzl.

They later received a call from the institute telling them that their demand had been met.

Speaking to AFP on Tuesday after the inscription Hussein Abu Khdeir said his son's name had been placed on the memorial without the family's consent.

"I am Palestinian, not Israeli, even if I am a resident of east Jerusalem, and I do not want his name written next to that of Israeli soldiers," he said.

Muhammad, 16, was burned to death in July 2014 by Jewish Israelis in a suspected revenge attack for the murders of three Israeli teenagers in the occupied West Bank.

The Palestinian youth had originally been recognized by Israeli authorities as a victim of terror as Israel marked Memorial Day on Tuesday to honor soldiers and civilians killed since the founding of the state in 1948.

Muhammad's family said that Israel only added his name to "improve its image to the world" after the gruesome murder which shocked residents of occupied East Jerusalem.

"We refuse that Muhammad's name be included to the list of Jewish victims, and adding his name to the list will not change the fact of Israeli racism," the family said.

Relatives said that the suspects in the killing have had 12 court hearings since the incident, despite

overwhelming evidence of the crime.

A Palestinian suspect would have been sentenced immediately, without delays, they said.

Muhammad's father Hussein Abu Khdeir told Ma'an that Israeli authorities in Jerusalem forced the family to remove a large picture of their son which they put up outside of their home last year, and threatened to fine the family 2,000 shekels ($500) every day that the poster was not removed.

Hussein that the Almagor Terror Victims Association in Jerusalem had originally objected to adding Muhammad's name to the memorial list and called for it to be removed.

AFP contributed to this report.

Palestinians don't want hypocritical gestures like including the name of a martyr killed with unbelievable sadism (in Hebrew!) on a plaque. And being realists, they don't really expect justice. What they DO want is an end to the occupation and a state which includes their 1,400 year old holy places.

Muhammed's father did exactly right!! He stood against the Zionist regime, did what was right and was proud to be a Palestinian. But not all Palestinians do what he did and it's time that all Palestinians learn from him.

The Abu Khdeir family have shown nothing but dignity since the horrific murder of their son. Hussein Abu Khdeir has every right to ask for his son's name to be removed from the memorial. Shame Israel didn't show some humility in asking Hussein Abu Khdier for his permission before inscribing it.

Netanyahu incited riots against Palestinians. The murder of Abu was a direct result of Netanyahu's incitement. The pretext for the police encouraged riot was israel was trying to find the 3 kidnapped israeli teenagers alive. More than 13 innocent Palestinians were murdered.
