PLO adopts resolution to halt security coordination with Israel

March 5, 2015 10:28 P.M. (Updated: March 6, 2015 6:31 P.M.)
RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- The PLO's Central Council has adopted several major resolutions during its 27th meeting over the past two days, including a decision to suspend security coordination with Israel.

The resolutions were based on the current political situation and include calling for Israel to assume "all its responsibilities in accordance with its obligations under international law" as the occupying power, a statement said.

The council also called to "suspend all forms of security coordination given Israel's systematic and ongoing noncompliance with its obligations under signed agreements," to boycott all Israeli products -- not just settlement goods -- and to reject "attempts to recognize Israel as a Jewish State."

It also called for strengthening political reconciliation to facilitate the reconstruction of the war-torn Gaza Strip, and to hold presidential and parliamentary elections "as soon as possible."

The council expressed full support for high-level diplomatic initiatives and the International Criminal Court, while also calling on the international community to hold Israel accountable for "systematic violations of international law."

The PLO, in coordination with the Arab League, will also request that the UN Security Council set an end date for Israel's withdrawal from all occupied territories and honor the rights of refugees in accordance with UN Resolution 194.

The statement added that the PLO Executive Committee would execute all decisions made by the central council.

PLO officials Nasser al-Deen Shaer and Sameer Abu Aisha, who attended the session, told Ma'an that the decision to halt security coordination will be executed at the appropriate time following discussions with the executive committee.
