Report: Israeli stabbed near Jerusalem Old City

Jan. 8, 2015 8:08 P.M. (Updated: Jan. 10, 2015 12:50 P.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- A Jewish Israeli man was stabbed while walking near the Old City of East Jerusalem on Thursday evening, Israeli media said.

Police told Israeli web site Yediot Ahronot that the man was stabbed while walking just north of Damascus Gate on Sultan Suleiman Street in occupied East Jerusalem, and that the assailant had fled the scene of the purported attack.

The victim was identified as a 21-year-old Israeli. Reports said he was stabbed in the upper torso.

The alleged stabbing comes after a brief lull in hostilities in Jerusalem in recent weeks coinciding with Christmas festivities, the Prophet Muhammad's birthday, and the Jewish celebration of Chanukah.

The months before the lull saw daily Israeli police raids on Palestinian neighborhoods as well as a series of tit-for-tat attacks by Jewish Israelis against Palestinians and vice-versa across Jerusalem.

The majority of the attacks have occurred in East Jerusalem, where around 200,000 Israeli settlers live in Jewish-only neighborhoods built on occupied land since 1967 beside more than 200,000 Palestinians who have lived there for generations.

The tensions were fueled by months of clashes with police over summer, as thousands of Palestinians took to the streets to protest against a massive Israeli arrest campaign and the Israeli assault on Gaza over summer which left nearly 2,200 Palestinians dead.
