Soldiers fire at undocumented Palestinian workers near Tulkarem

Dec. 1, 2014 5:56 P.M. (Updated: Dec. 3, 2014 2:45 P.M.)
TULKAREM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces on Monday opened fire at Palestinian workers who tried to cross into Israel without permits near the Jubara checkpoint south of Tulkarem, witnesses said.

Witnesses told Ma'an Israeli soldiers shut down the checkpoint in both directions and detained a number of undocumented workers.

Israeli forces deployed heavily in the area following the incident, they said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

An Israeli army spokesman told Ma'an a number of Palestinians "approached the fence and began climbing the fence," and that Israeli soldiers fired warning shots in the air, commanding them to stop.

When the Palestinians did not stop, Israeli soldiers detained them for questioning, the spokesman said.

He did not immediately have information about how many Palestinians were detained.

According to the Israeli rights group B'Tselem, Israel denies permits to tens of thousands of Palestinians, with around 15,000-30,000 Palestinians working in Israel without permits.
