Egypt deports 68 Palestinian migrants to Gaza

Oct. 13, 2014 11:20 A.M. (Updated: Oct. 16, 2014 11:41 A.M.)
CAIRO (Ma'an) -- Egyptian authorities deported 68 Palestinians back to Gaza on Monday after they attempted to reach Europe from the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria.

The Palestinian migrants were found in Alexandria by security forces and had hoped to reach Italy, Egyptian officials said.

An Egyptian court declared that all 68 be deported to Gaza after it emerged they had used smuggling tunnels in Gaza to enter Egyptian territory.

In early September, 43 Palestinians were detained near Alexandria while attempting to reach Europe.

A large ship carrying around 500 migrants, including Palestinians, capsized off the coast of Malta on Sept. 14, leaving the vast majority dead.

More than 100,000 migrants have taken the dangerous voyage across the Mediterranean sea into Europe since the beginning of 2014, one of the highest numbers in recorded history.
